What is special Learning Difficulty (SLD)
 
  • Sometimes we find children possessing unique combination of skills and difficulties.
  • These Children are talented and creative
  • They have average intelligence or above average intelligence.
  • Their minds work exactly the same way as the mind of the genius, but the way they receive, process and express information is different and
  • because of this basic difference, the children ability to read, write, spell, or compute mathematics are severely affected.
  • SLD is an umbrella term used to describe a variety of learning problems whish confronts children and which ultimately lead to poor academic
  • performance in reading, spelling writing or computing math.
Important points to Remember
 
  • These children have average or above average intelligence.
  • They are talented and creative.
Certain Misconceptions
 
  • Learning difficulties are not the same as mental retardation, autism, deafness and blindness
  • These children are not lazy or stupid
  • They do not need pills or diet to cure them.
How Prevalent is it in Children?
 
  • 15% of our school going children between the age of 6-11 years have specific or general learning difficulties.
Different kinds of learning difficulties
 
Dyslexia- Reading Difficulty

  • Child cannot read
  • Child cannot understand what he reads
  • Child cannot associate tellers with sounds.
  • Child cannot blend sounds
  • Child cannot spell or pronounce words.
  Dyscalculia – Mathematical Difficulty.

  • These children cannot solve simple and complex mathematical operations.
  • These children cannot understand the concept of time and direction.
  • They have problems in handling money transaction.
  Dysgraphia – Writing Difficulty.

  • These children have poor pencil grip
  • These children cannot put thoughts on paper.
  • These children cannot write within margins and has problems with line spacing.
  Dyspraxia Co-ordination difficulty.

  • These children cannot perform motor task
  • These children have speech problems.
  • These children have poor short term memory.
  How can we help children with SLD?
  • Early assessment by clinical psychologists, educators or counselors.
  • Remedial teaching that is preparing an Individualized educational programme (IEP) for each child according to his/her functional level, which will help him to overcome his weakness in a particular area.
